After the last installment of Fuzz Wars, I felt it was necessary to give the Arc Effects’ Big Green π a more in-depth look since I had missed an integral section of the pedal. Inside the effect box, there are dip switches inside the unit that greatly affects the sound of the pedal. Dip Switch 1: Diode lift – results in more volume, less compression and more low end (a must for bassists!). Dip switch 2: Midrange Voicing – helps the classic muff sound cut through in the mix a la scooped mids. In this video, you really can hear the differences, giving this pedal new life.
I decided to run it against what the pedal is cloned after…my mighty Sovtek Big Muff. As you can hear from the video, the two pedals are very different. If you had a chance to see the Fuzz Wars “Sovtek Battle,” we spoke about how most Sovteks sound very different. What I believe is that this Arc Effects Big Green π was based off a Sovtek that appears to be as different as any two Sovteks can be. This would most likely account for the differences I am hearing because there are so many different versions of the same era Sovtek Big Muff pedal. It sounds like mine has a bit more saturation and low end whereas Arc Effects Big Green π is a bit more focused.
