It seems like every time the basses with Dark Star pickups gets mentioned or talked about, I get a lot of requests for more information about these elusive pickups. When we had my friend Oz’s Dark Star Jazz bass on PedalsAndEffects the comments came flying in, and one of the recurring questions was, “how do these pickups sound with effects?” Here is our video response to that question!
Now if you need a little more info about Dark Star pickups, you can read our previous post here but I need to add that there are basses coming out with Dark Star/Bi-Sonic looking pickups which do not sound like the pickups featured in these videos. Dark Stars were made by the legendary Fred Hammon and he made history with his take on the Hagstrom Bi-Sonic pickups (companies like Guild are trying to recreate this huge sound but their pickups do not stand up to what Fred did and, from what I understand, Curtis Novak’s versions do).
What we did in this video is put Oz’s Dark Star bass through an Earthquaker Devices demo board and blasted out sounds that are so huge, no one can deny the massiveness of Dark Star pickups! Don’t fall for the weak imitations, I would set out and get some real Dark Star pickups or email Curtis Novak and get a set for yourself!
