Last month, I spent some time in Akron, Ohio shooting some great videos to showcase Earthquaker Devices‘ new optical vibe machine, The Depths, alongside with their Monarch Overdrive and Hoof Reaper Fuzz. I had a great time shooting these but more importantly, I wanted to share these performances with PedalsAndEffects fans because these videos showcase how much the pedals inspire the musician.
I tend to not prepare parts ahead of time when I shoot videos because I want to be able to adjust my playing as we adjust the settings on the pedals. When we shot these, Earthquaker Devices’ Fej (Jeff France) would move the knobs on the pedals and I would adjust my playing to the tonal changes. What you see here in these videos is me altering the bass part to really accentuate the pedal’s ability to create musical sounds.
My biggest take away from this particular shoot was how much I liked everything I played, which is a huge reflection on the quality of these Earthquaker Devices pedals. I never had to work up to something or do several takes to arrive at something I was satisfied with; we ended up getting great stuff in just one take. Again- it’s about the pedals inspiring the musician to create great music spontaneously, and these Earthquaker Devices pedals did just that.
