PedalsAndEffects gets another exclusive and this time we are reviewing a pedal that came to me in prototype form from Mr Black called the Fwonk Beta! Mr. Black is building pedals out of Portland, OR and he definitely knows his stuff. So when he said he wanted to send me something he was developing, I was all in!
I love a good envelope filter, and I usually use my vintage Mutron III or the discontinued Guyatone BR-2 Bottom Wah Rocker for the funkiness. I have seen a lot of other good envelope filters but they do end up offering similar abilities and rarely do I like them as much as the two I just referenced. Well, not anymore.
Jack at Mr. Black nailed it with this pedal! The voicing of the filter is so human voice-like and really articulates the bass notes in the most musical way. The filter really gets in the deepest depths of low end while the top end of the filter never gets too brittle like a lot of other envelope filters. Add that the sensitivity of the Fwonk Beta is spot on and really makes playing an envelope as second nature as talking or singing!
Not sure when Mr. Black is going to have these Fwonk Beta’s ready for sale but hit him up and order yours if you dig this video!
