PedalsAndEffects 3rd year anniversary week continues with a Throwback Thursday post!
And here we are! PedalsAndEffects has carved out its place in the massive gear website landscape and I want to thank all of you who support the site!. With all the touring, clinic runs and recording sessions I do, I always find a way to always contribute to PedalsAndEffects. Whether it is on a plane, hotel room, backstage, in the studio or at my home, I will break out the laptop and set up posts for the site.
It all started when I was backstage somewhere, bored, while The Mars Volta was still touring. I remember looking up “www.pedalsandeffects.com” to see if it existed and when I saw it didn’t, I secured it and spent weeks going over if I could actually pull off my website. I asked members of Mars Volta, I spoke to Jonathan Hischke about it, consulted with pedal makers like Earthquaker Devices and MXR…I even asked my parents what they thought. The one thing that convinced me the most was what I saw on YouTube and what I didn’t see. What I didn’t see was a good representation of how I usually research, create and ultimately use pedals! The decision was made!
So looking back at my first video, I always crack up. 5starr Sound Labs, my studio, looked so empty and I am pretty nervous. What really blows me away is the editing of that video. That is back when it was just me shooting, audio engineering, editing and posting all by myself. I have been lucky to have a few great people help me out over time… Mondo Diaz, Joe Peña, Melvin Marroquin, Ian Mackley and now Max Kane and Lucas Hodge! The biggest shout out goes to my video/editor man of almost two years, Scott Ward, for helping me make the site so much better. Thank you to all of you!
I also have to shout out to guests Jonathan Hischke, Scott Shriner, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Nick Reinhart, Tim Lefebvre, Troy Ziegler, Dan Elkan, Janek Gwizdala, Henry Cohen for shooting videos with me and all the pedal/instrument/gear makers who have contributed to the site like Earthquaker Devices, Ampeg, Ernie Ball, Red Panda, Pigtronix, Zvex, Source Audio and so many more.
Here is a Throwback video post. This is my very first post where the only way you can learn what pedals I used was by watching the video. I am guessing I didn’t know how to add links yet! Here you go now! Dunlop 105Q Bass Wah into Boss CS-2 into Sovtek Big Muff, into Boss PN-2.
Funnily enough, I just shot a helicopter sound video for Chicago Music Exchange last week, but with Earthquaker Devices pedals, achieving the same results! I have gotten so much mileage out of this sound. I used it all over the Vato Negro record, then I used it for years in Mars Volta jams and now I use it in video posts!
